CHRISTA FORSYTHE - B.A., C.M.T.

" If only our own face would allow the invisible carver’s hand to bring the deep grain of love to the surface. "

— David Whyte

My interest in massage began in the 1970’s when some of the first alternative healing schools were coming into being in the U.S. I attended The Massage Institute in San Francisco, and while living in Hawaii I had the good fortune to study with Auntie Margaret Machado, a treasure of Hawaiian Lomi-Lomi massage, folk medicine, and herbal remedies. Ten years later, I came to Boulder, CO to study at the Boulder College of Massage Therapy (BCMT) and graduated in 1986. I have been an instructor of Zen Shiatsu at BCMT since 1993, as well as teaching Movement and Integrative Therapeutic Massage. I have also served as the Director of Student Affairs. The BCMT is one of the premier massage schools in the country, and I am proud to be both an alumna and an instructor there.

I originally came to bodywork as a professional modern dancer, dancing in companies in San Francisco and Hawaii. I understand the body from a structural, dynamic, and artistic point of view. My early college experience began as a pre-med student and dance major at Washington University. In 1991, I completed my B.A. from Naropa University with a combined degree in Movement Studies and Psychology. Naropa is a university influenced by Tibetan Buddhism, which pioneered a contemplative and meditative approach to education. The years I spent at Naropa as a student and a teacher gave me the opportunity and freedom to explore, and eventually synthesize, seemingly disparate interests.

In the last 7 years I have deepened my understanding of the evolution of consciousness through my spiritual studies with Spirit Fire Meditative Retreat Center. Concurrently I began to be attracted to more energetic models and approaches to healing, which is now reflected in my private practice. This extensive and eclectic background in movement, performance arts, psychology, meditation, science, holistic medicine, energy medicine, and diverse trainings in bodywork, has given me the powerful and insightful tools to work with clients in a way that is both transformative and practical.

About My Work

I offer several styles of bodywork based on the preference and interest of the client. A free consultation is available to discuss your concerns. All bodywork is best received when you haven’t eaten a heavy meal, and have time after the session to relax and assimilate the work.

Integrative Therapeutic Massage Therapy

Integrative massage is loosely based on the work of Wilhelm Reich and was a form of massage that originated at the BCMT 30 years ago. It is a slow, intentional form of massage that focuses on breath and attending to the sensations and communications the body offers us, but to which we are often immune because of the pace of life we live. This form of work can bring an experience of being more open and unified as physical armoring and emotional/mental patterns of holding are eased.

Sessions last 1 ½ hours.

Shiatsu Synthesis:

I have been studying both Zen and Quantum Shiatsu from two extraordinary teachers, Lindy Ferrigno and Pauline Sasaki, for 20 years. I recently named my work “Shiatsu Synthesis” because it reflects the alchemy of combining both forms of Shiatsu with spiritual counseling and a refined energetic approach to healing.

Shiatsu shares a common theoretical basis with Acupuncture, based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Through the use of hands and thumbs instead of needles, Shiatsu promotes integration on all levels of our human-beingness. In Asian/Energetic healing modalities, a scope of knowledge that goes beyond the physical structure only is needed to assist with this integration. The underlying cause of a problem may not always reside on a physical level. The aim of Shiatsu is to understand an individual on physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual levels and bring these many components into a healthy state of synthesis and awareness.

This form of bodywork has a potentially transformative quality because it works with bringing all aspects of the self to vibrational resonance with our highest and truest Self.

Sessions last 1 ½ hours and are received on a table while you are clothed. Please wear comfortable, stretchy clothes and socks.
